Marc Marquez is on the verge of making MotoGP history as he heads to Assen for the 2025 Dutch MotoGP round. A win this weekend would allow the eight-time world champion to equal Giacomo Agostini’s record of 68 premier-class victories, placing him joint second on the all-time winners list—behind only Valentino Rossi’s iconic 89 wins.
Marquez arrives in the Netherlands riding high after a commanding performance at Mugello, where he achieved a perfect weekend by claiming pole position, the Sprint race win, and the main Grand Prix victory. It was his first full GP win in five years and a powerful reminder of his world-class form.
“This is the first back-to-back of the season,” Marquez noted ahead of the race. “We head to Assen after an unforgettable win at Mugello, which meant a lot considering how long it had been since I won there.”
However, the Assen circuit has historically posed challenges for the Spaniard. He has only secured two MotoGP victories at the Dutch track—once in 2014 and again in 2018. Last season, in his debut year aboard the Gresini Ducati, Marquez crashed out of the Sprint and initially finished fourth in the main race, only to be relegated to tenth due to a tyre pressure penalty.
“Assen isn’t a track that typically complements my riding style,” Marquez admitted. “But Ducati has shown great strength here in recent years. I’m feeling great physically, and we need to make the most of that.”
Ducati has a strong record at Assen, having won the past three editions of the Dutch GP, with Francesco Bagnaia leading the charge. If Marquez secures victory on Sunday, it would mark his first hat-trick of consecutive Grand Prix wins since 2019—the same season he last claimed the MotoGP world title.
Regardless of the outcome, Marquez enters the weekend with a 40-point cushion over his brother Alex in the championship standings. Even if he fails to score in Assen, he will remain at the top of the leaderboard heading into the next round.
