Iconic motorcycle brand BSA is all set to make a comeback. Reports have emerged claiming that BSA motorcycles are all set to return. These motorcycles would be produced in England, just like old BSAs were. Anand Mahindra, the Chairman of the Mahindra Group is said to be the main individual backing the BSA comeback project.
BSA is a legendary brand with a rich history and heritage that one can boast of. It has in the past manufactured several legendary motorcycles. Financial woes led to the brand reducing to nothing but a maker of BSA T-shirts and other merchandise. However, the heritage built by the brand over the decades wasn’t one to be forgotten very easily.
In 2016, Mahindra-owned subsidiary Classic Legends Pvt Ltd bought the BSA brand with a revival in mind. Classic Legends is a brand formed with the intention to revive some legendary brands from the past. Other than BSA, the brand also bought the rights to Jawa and Yezdi. Jawa has already made its way to market and is doing pretty well.
Rumours have been doing the rounds that Yezdi would be next in line and now there are reports that BSA is the brand that will be relaunched next. Mid-2021 is when the production of BSA motorcycles is expected to restart. The location of the new production plant is rumoured to be close to the site of the original factory in Small Heath, Birmingham.
A new research facility is also being built in Banbury to develop BSA’s upcoming motorcycles. Classic Legends chose the UK as the production site not just because of the heritage value it brings, but also because of the grants provided by the government. The UK Government has provided a £4.6m (Rs 45.2 crore) grant to BSA in hopes of creating more jobs and new electric motorcycles, thereby giving a boost to the economy as well.
The first of BSA’s new lineup of motorcycles will be an electric motorcycle. However, there are plans of developing and launching a petrol-powered motorcycle too. At the moment there are no other details of upcoming motorcycles from the English brand. We do know that we will see two new BSA motorcycles in 2021 and we are looking forward to it. However, since production is in the UK, the motorcycles would therefore be more expensive when launched in India
