The Honda Transalp name has been registered in the American market. The Transalp is expected to be Honda’s mid-weight adventure tourer. Honda currently lacks a middle-weight ADV in its portfolio, and the Transalp could just be what Honda needs to take on the competition.
Honda is one of the most known and most versatile motorcycle manufacturers in the world. The Japanese brand has developed and manufactured motorcycles and scooters that perfectly fit the needs of almost anybody. Right from the little Honda Grom and Honda Cub to the big names like the CBR1000RR Fireblade and Gold Wing, Honda has made motorcycles for almost every segment.
There is one segment though that Honda seems to have missed out on — the mid-weight ADV segment. Honda makes the CB500X which is a road-biased ADV Tourer that slots in the 500cc ADV segment. The brand also makes the CRF1100L Africa Twin that slots in the flagship ADV segment. However, there’s no motorcycle to bridge the gap between these two.
The mid-weight adventure motorcycle segment is one of the fastest-growing ones out there and is quickly gaining popularity. Motorcycles like the KTM 890 Adventure, Yamaha Tenere 700, BMW F 850 GS, Triumph Tiger 900, etc all slot into this highly profitable segment. Honda certainly wouldn’t want to be left out.
For a long time now, there have been rumours of Honda working on a smaller version of the Africa Twin. Now, the fact that Honda has registered the Transalp name suggests that the motorcycle will definitely make it to the production line soon. A lesser known fact is that this is not the first time Honda is naming a motorcycle ‘Transalp.’
The Japanese brand previously manufactured the Transalp Dual-Sport motorcycle starting in 1987 with engine capacities ranging from 400cc to 700cc. These bikes were known to be extremely capable and now Honda seems to want to revive the brand name.
Honda could power the new Transalp with the 745cc, parallel-twin engine that currently does duty in the Honda NS750. More details are expected to be revealed in the upcoming months.
