Rajiv Bajaj, the Managing Director at Bajaj Auto, has recently stated that the company is planning to launch premium electric vehicles like those from the Tesla stable. The intriguing bit is that he added that these may be ready for launch as early as 2020 itself. Mr Bajaj also stated that the electric two wheeler may be a scooter, a Bajaj electric scooter is not far from reality and might actually already exist.
Bajaj Auto has reportedly issued its confirmation that it will not be building petrol scooters anymore. Bajaj Auto will be foraying into the EV category by the year 2020 although there is no confirmation on whether the first electric two wheeler prototype is ready. Rajiv Bajaj is expecting premium electric two wheelers to be a major growth driver for Bajaj Auto in the long run.
Ather Energy and Okinawa are the only electric prominent two wheeler manufactures currently in the Indian market at present. Both manufactures have several features and technologies which are missing in regular petrol rivals. The first Bajaj electric two wheeler should sport a distinctive and premium design along with highly advanced features. The electric vehicle segment for two wheelers will witness high competition from several market players from 2020 on-wards courtesy the Indian Government’s push on mass electrification of vehicles.
