Race 1 at the Nurburgring is one that turned the season, Max Biaggi took race 1 while the promising Melandri crashed out of the race in lap seven. Race one was special for Aprilia as all the top three spots were taken by team Aprilia, a first for them. Biaggi was followed by Eugene Laverty and Chaz Davies.
Biaggi started the race with a mistake at turn one allowing Sykes to pass through. Michel Fabrizio was the first to crash on lap one, followed by Carlos Checa on the next, of the two Checa managed to get back in the race and finished 12th. Biaggi made his first move on Sykes in the 8th lap but could not hold his line and it took him another four laps before he could get ahead. Sykes now was having tyre issues and this enabled Laverty and Davies to get through and that remained the standings till the end of race 1.
Race 2 saw a very aggressive Biaggi who was pushing hard to get ahead of Sykes and Laverty. A tight pass by Sykes on Laverty saw, Laverty run in to the gravel trap and he rejoined in 6th. In all the confusion, Biaggi had to brake hard to avoid a collision and crashed, he was able to rejoin but finished last.
Melandri was the lucky one who was gifted the second spot followed by Chaz Davies. Melandri soon enough caught up with Sykes and passed him on the 8th lap but unfortunately had a bad crash the very next lap and could not continue further. It was a terrible home race for BMW as later on in the race Leon Haslam also crashed out.
The race was Chaz Davies’s now, Sykes was again plagued by tyre issues that enabled Eugene Laverty and Leon Camier to take the second and third spots. Sykes ended the race in fifth. Jonathan Rea came in fourth and looked confident, probably testing with Repsol Honda has had a good effect on him. Check out the both the race 1 and race 2 results below.
