The Royal Enfield Goan Classic 350 has arrived, sparking conversations and turning heads. Is it just a Classic 350 with ape hangers? A closer look reveals a motorcycle with a distinct personality, deeply rooted in the spirit of Goa and the bobber tradition.

Design and Styling: A Nod to the Hippie Era

The Goan Classic 350 makes a bold statement with its styling. The most striking feature is the tall, ape-style U-shaped handlebar, complemented by a shorter front fender, all-LED lighting, and cross-spoke wheels with tubeless whitewall tires—a first for the J-platform. The 19-inch front and 16-inch rear wheels, combined with a lower 750mm seat height and forward-set footpegs, create a distinctive bobber stance. The rear features a slash-cut exhaust, a longer swingarm-mounted rear fender, and a new tail-light housing.

The available colors, including the attention-grabbing “Trip Teal” with its oxidized orange accents and mandala pattern, aim to capture the vibrant Goan vibe. While opinions on the specific color schemes vary, the overall aesthetic is undeniably eye-catching. The fit and finish are commendable, further enhancing the bike’s appeal.

Engine and Performance: Familiar Refinement

The Goan Classic 350 utilizes the familiar 349cc air-cooled, single-cylinder J-series engine, producing 20.2bhp at 6100rpm and 27Nm of torque at 4000rpm. This engine is known for its smooth performance, strong low-end and mid-range torque, and refined character, retaining the classic RE thump without excessive vibrations. The five-speed gearbox is smooth and well-suited for city riding, but a sixth gear would enhance highway cruising. The engine’s tractability allows for comfortable riding at low speeds in higher gears.  Interestingly even with the change in tyre sizes compared to the regular Classics, the Goan retains the same gearing thanks to the larger tyre walls.

Ride and Handling: A Relaxed Cruiser with Some Quirks

The ergonomics of the Goan Classic 350, with its taller handlebar, lower seat, and forward-set footpegs, create a relaxed, almost Thunderbird-like riding posture. While the handlebar height is generally comfortable, some riders may prefer a slightly lower position, which is available as an accessory. The wide seat adds to the comfort, but the rear suspension, while offering slightly more travel than the standard Classic 350, is notably stiffer. This, combined with the front-hinged seat design, can result in a less forgiving ride on rough roads.

Despite this, the Goan Classic handles surprisingly well when you are a single rider. It’s stable at various speeds and leans into corners with confidence. The brakes offer adequate feedback and bite, and the dual-channel ABS provides added safety. However, the bike is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace, embracing the “Susegad” (laid-back) Goan spirit.

Features and Technology: Modern Touches on a Classic Design

The Goan Classic 350 features modern touches like all-LED lighting, a digital display integrated with an analog cluster, a Tripper navigation pod (optional), a charging port, and dual-channel ABS. The use of metal switchgear, previously seen on the 650cc RE models, is a welcome addition. The tubeless cross-spoke wheels are a segment-first and a practical upgrade and we hope to see it on other bikes too. We also wish the headlights were more powerful.

Pros:

  • Distinctive bobber styling with strong road presence.
  • Refined and tractable J-series engine.
  • Comfortable ergonomics for relaxed cruising.
  • Modern features like LED lighting, digital display, and dual-channel ABS.
  • Tubeless spoked wheels.

Cons:

  • Stiffer rear suspension can be uncomfortable on rough roads.
  • Lack of a sixth gear for relaxed highway cruising.
  • Limited luggage carrying capacity and the pillion seat is just a namesake.
  • Higher price compared to the standard Classic 350.

Conclusion: A Stylish Statement for the Solo Rider

The Royal Enfield Goan Classic 350 is not just a Classic 350 with a different handlebar; it’s a motorcycle with a distinct character. It’s a stylish statement piece that captures the essence of the bobber style and the laid-back Goan vibe. While it may not be the most practical choice for long-distance touring or carrying a pillion, it’s perfect for solo riders who prioritize style, relaxed cruising and short rides and turning heads. If you’re looking for a factory-built bobber with a touch of retro charm, the Goan Classic 350 is definitely worth considering. It is a motorcycle that nobody was necessarily asking for, but it has turned out to be a pleasant surprise.
