KTM has entered the world of automated transmissions with its latest powertrain innovations. Known as the AMT, or Automated Manual Transmission, this new gearbox option combines the brand’s signature sporty performance with enhanced ease of use across various riding conditions. A clear example of its potential was showcased when Johnny Aubert piloted a prototype during the Iron Road Prologue at the Red Bull Erzbergrodeo.
At the heart of the AMT system is the ability for riders to switch between manual shifting in M Mode—without needing a clutch—or fully automatic shifting in A Mode. After engaging 1st gear, the rider simply increases the engine speed, allowing the centrifugal clutch to engage and set the motorcycle in motion.
This feature simplifies starting on inclines, pulling away, stopping, and low-speed maneuvers, especially on larger motorcycles. Additionally, stalling the engine is impossible, which is a major advantage in challenging conditions.
Unlike conventional motorcycle gearboxes, the AMT includes a P – N – 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6 gear sequence, with “P” standing for PARK. This locks the gearbox with a pawl, preventing any unwanted rolling.
Both the PARK and NEUTRAL positions can only be selected via the paddle shifter on the handlebar switch cube, whether the engine is running or not. To engage 1st gear, the rider must apply either the front or rear brake.
Gear shifting in the AMT is electronically managed through the ECU and Transmission Control Unit. An electromechanical shift actuator operates the shift drum, enabling shifts between gears in just 50 milliseconds—comparable to traditional transmissions using a Quickshifter+.

Although the benefits of automated transmissions are well-known, the AMT’s standout feature is its Manual Mode. In this mode, riders can shift gears manually using the standard gear lever or the paddle shifter, retaining KTM’s “Ready to Race” dynamic without sacrificing speed or agility. The gearbox has been carefully designed to keep traditional proportions and maintain a similar weight range.
The AMT system also offers a variety of customizable settings. SHIFTING modes work in conjunction with RIDE modes, allowing riders to tailor the setup to their preferences, no matter the riding environment.
The all-new AMT will be available on select KTM models initially, with plans to expand its availability across more models in the coming years.
