Pulsar N 160 SS review

The 160cc streetfighter segment in India has evolved rapidly from basic daily commuters to feature-packed machines. With the launch of the Bajaj Pulsar N160 SS, Bajaj has raised the stakes by introducing segment-first rider aids, class-leading electronics, and an updated four-valve 164.5cc 4 valve engine takes the power to 18.5 PS with 14 Nm of torque.

Offered alongside the existing N160, the new Pulsar N160 S enters the market at INR 1,33,511 (ex-showroom Delhi), while the flagship Pulsar N160 SS is priced at INR 1,42,585 (ex-showroom Delhi). Both bikes are available across Bajaj Auto dealerships nationwide.

  • 164.5cc 4 valve engine takes the power to 18.5 PS while retaining the 14 Nm of torque.
  • 5 speed gearbox
  • 151 kg
  • Oil Cooled
  • 4 ride modes
  • 165 mm ground clearance
  • 795 mm seat height
  • Disc at front and rear(300mm/230mm)
  • Single Channel ABS for 160S
  • Dual channel ABS for 160SS
  • Google Maps mirroring for 160SS
  • Turn by Turn Nav for 160S
  • 0-60 in 4.5s
  • Traction Control

Here is my detailed first ride impression of the new Pulsar N160 SS.

1. Design & Hardware Upgrades

The Pulsar 160 SS takes heavy design inspiration from the larger N-series family, giving it an imposing, big-bike visual presence that easily punches above its displacement class.

  • Inverted Front Forks: The golden USD forks give the front end a muscular stance while enhancing front-end stability.
  • Engine Air Shrouds: Dedicated plastic air-deflector cowls are integrated into the frame to channel fresh air directly around the engine block for improved thermal efficiency.
  • Braking Hardware: Larger petal-type discs paired with dual-channel ABS provide sharp stopping power.
  • Adjustable Levers: A standout premium addition in this category is the inclusion of adjustable clutch and front brake levers.

2. Engine Performance & Throttle Character

At the heart of the Pulsar 160 SS is an updated 4-valve, single-cylinder engine producing 18 PS of power.

Traditionally, low-capacity high-revving engines trade low-end torque for a top-end rush. Bajaj has engineered a balanced spread of power here:

  • Tractable Low End: Commuting in bumper-to-bumper city traffic does not require constant downshifting.
  • Strong Mid-to-Top End: The engine pulls cleanly to the rev limiter, reaching 0–60 km/h in roughly 4.0 seconds and with cruising speeds of 100 km/h with ease. Top speeds are closer to 120 kmph speedo indicated.
  • Electronic Throttle Feel: The bike uses an electronic throttle setup. While responsive during spirited riding, riders moving from mechanical cable throttles will notice a microscopic split-second lag upon initial twist.

3. Refinement & Gearbox

Refinement is where the Pulsar 160 SS makes significant strides:

  • Slick Gear Shifts: The gearbox offers smooth shifts with no false neutrals.
  • Vibration Control: Cruising at 90 km/h is butter-smooth. Typical single-cylinder buzz is well-contained and only creeps in past the 7,000–8,000 RPM mark.
  • Fuel Economy Potential: Under steady urban riding, the engine is poised to return between 45 to 50 km/l.

4. Ride Quality, Handling & Ergonomics

  • Suspension Tuning: The suspension strikes a fine balance between progressive sportiness and daily comfort. It absorbs potholes, speed breakers, and patchwork tarmac without upsetting the chassis balance. The front is significantly softer than the rear.
  • Rider Triangle: The seating posture is upright and accessible. With a friendly seat height, flat-footing is easy for most riders. Taller riders (5’11” and above) may prefer a slightly wider handlebar sweep for a more relaxed shoulder stance on longer stints.
  • Navigating in city traffic feels light and easy.

5. Technology & Cockpit Features

The cockpit on the 160 SS offers class-leading instrumentation and electronic aids:

FeatureDetails & Functionality
Color DisplayMulti-function digital console with intuitive switchgear controls.
Turn-by-Turn Screen CastingMirrors full Google Maps navigation on-screen. Supports locked-phone navigation on Android.
Safety SuiteSwitchable Riding Modes (including Sport), Traction Control (TC), and Dual-Channel ABS.
Trip TelemetryDisplays real-time acceleration timer (0–60 km/h), Distance to Empty (DTE), and battery voltage.
ConvenienceIntegrated USB Type-C charging port next to the steering headstock.

6. Verdict

The Bajaj Pulsar 160 SS is a mature, punchy, and technology-rich power commuter. It bridges the gap between everyday urban practicality and sporty weekend performance, backed by modern features like traction control, Google Maps integration, and a refined 18 PS motor.

If you are looking for a feature-packed 160cc naked streetfighter that delivers aggressive styling alongside daily usability, the 160 SS demands a spot on your shortlist.

If I were to be nit-picking, the only real shortcoming is that it looks quite similar to the rest the Pulsar N range and a differentiating factor would have been great. Secondly I wish the bezels on the screen where a whole lot smaller, or the screen bigger.
