Thyssenkrupp Automotive Technology has announced its brand-new Global Capability Center (GCC) in Pune, India, marking a major step forward in expanding its international research and development network. Located in the Solitaire Business Hub 2 within Pune’s Baner-Balewadi business district, the facility strengthens the firm’s R&D capabilities for software-defined mobility and advanced chassis systems.

Plans for the Pune site were originally announced in 2025, and following an initial build-up phase, the centre is now fully integrated into Thyssenkrupp Automotive Technology’s global engineering operations.

Expanding Engineering Capacity for Next-Gen Vehicles

Following its initial ramp-up phase, the Pune centre already houses more than 120 engineers working across software, hardware, systems, and mechanical development for international client programs. Moving forward, Thyssenkrupp Automotive Technology plans to expand the Pune team to over 300 employees in the coming years.

The facility focuses heavily on key technical domains as vehicles become increasingly connected, automated, and software-defined. Core areas of development include:

  • Embedded systems
  • Functional safety
  • Cybersecurity
  • Next-generation steering and chassis technologies

Engineers based in Pune collaborate directly with international R&D teams, contributing to global customer projects throughout the entire development lifecycle.

Why Pune Was Chosen as the R&D Hub

Pune was selected due to its established automotive ecosystem, strong software engineering environment, top-tier universities, and deep pool of qualified tech talent.

As the center grows, recruitment will initially target roles in software, hardware, and mechanical engineering, with additional specialized skill sets added as business and technical needs evolve. The company also intends to partner with local universities and engineering organizations across Pune to spur innovation and recruit top talent.

According to Viktor Molnar, COO of Thyssenkrupp Automotive Technology, establishing the Pune center strengthens the firm’s software and electronics capabilities while providing extra development capacity for global customers. Dr. Bjorn Erbe, Senior Vice President R&D for the chassis business, added that the site functions as a key engineering hub fully integrated into the global R&D network, helping scale development and accelerate technology solutions.

Broader Footprint in India

The new GCC forms part of a wider expansion strategy for Thyssenkrupp Automotive Technology across India. Alongside engineering and R&D:

  • Sourcing: India is serving as an increasingly vital sourcing hub for the business.
  • Sales: A dedicated sales team is being set up in Pune to build closer ties with domestic carmakers and unlock local market opportunities.
  • Production: Subject to securing future customer projects, the company also aims to establish local manufacturing capabilities in India.
