Xiaomi EV has just pulled back the curtain on its second-ever product series: the Xiaomi SkyNomad. While the brand’s existing Xiaomi SU7 and Xiaomi YU7 Series are firmly positioned as “the driver’s car”, this new line-up takes a completely different path. The SkyNomad Series is officially being positioned as an “intelligent, reconfigurable, large-space SUV”.

These two distinct product line-ups represent two very different answers to what buyers actually need, developed over more than five years of Xiaomi building cars. While its predecessor series put the spotlight on the person behind the wheel, the SkyNomad Series turns its attention completely to the people inside, transforming the cabin into an adaptive living space that changes based on the time of day. The launch marks a massive step forward in Xiaomi EV’s ongoing portfolio expansion.

Why Is Xiaomi Introducing the SkyNomad Series?

China’s auto industry has been moving at an absolute breakneck pace over the last few years. While large six- and seven-seat layouts packed with feature-rich interiors are fairly common nowadays, buyer priorities are starting to undergo a massive shift. People aren’t just looking for a large cabin or soft seats anymore; the real deciding factor is whether the occupants inside feel genuinely at ease.

This shift comes down to how owners are actually using their cars today. Between commuting up to two hours a day, resting in the driver’s seat, working from a parked car, taking the family on weekend trips, or turning the vehicle into a second home while camping, a car has become far more than just transport. It has evolved into an extension of the owner’s living space on the move.

Designing a car explicitly around how people feel inside it was the core starting point when the development of the SkyNomad got under way in early 2023.

A Cabin That Adapts Rather Than Just Adding Space

To bring this vision to life, the SkyNomad is built on top of Xiaomi’s brand-new Kunlun Architecture. Developed from early 2023, this specific setup was engineered from the ground up to allow for a fully reconfigurable interior space.

By utilizing a traditional SUV body style, a flat floor, and a long-track seating system, the cabin can effortlessly switch between different setups:

  • Driving Mode: Tailored to offer generous room for passengers, luggage, and pets on the move.
  • Parked Modes: Dynamically transforms the vehicle into a mobile workspace, a comfortable lounge, or a family activity space.

Pulling this off required a complex integration of AI, Xiaomi’s smart-device ecosystem, and advanced smart manufacturing capabilities—three areas where Lei Jun, the Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Xiaomi, has pointed out that the company holds a rare and unique depth of expertise.

Writing in a post on Weibo, Lei Jun described the development journey by stating, “Our answer was to let intelligence define the space, to build a living interior that moves with you.”

Who is the SkyNomad Built For?

The SkyNomad is strictly targetted at buyers who require a single, highly flexible tool that can easily handle daily commuting, family travel, and the occasional work-from-car scenario. It isn’t meant to be a simple lifestyle statement. Instead, it is aimed at professionals and parents alike, treating them not as separate categories of buyers, but as the exact same person changing roles across different hours of the day.

The Xiaomi SkyNomad Series is the direct result of three and a half years of intense development, and it will be launching in the Chinese mainland very soon. Stay tuned for more news as it drops.
