A fresh nationwide study by Ola Electric (Bengaluru, January 20, 2026) shows Indians dig electric vehicles (EVs) as a concept, but killer misconceptions about EV benefits are stalling the big switch from ICE vehicles to electric mobility.
While pure-play EV brands shine in recall, folks wildly underestimate EV ownership perks — thinking electric two-wheelers save just 20-50% on running costs vs. petrol. Reality? Up to 90% lower costs based on battery tech, flipping daily commute economics.
Top EV Adoption Barriers: Range Anxiety Over Price
Range anxiety and long-term trust top the list — not upfront costs. Most peg EV range at 100-150 km, missing that top electric scooters hit 300 km and electric motorcycles push 500 km per charge. EV performance and real range stay misunderstood nationwide.
Even EV shoppers lowball savings and range right up to purchase — misinformation runs deep.
Time to reframe EVs in India: Not just “cheaper petrol alternatives” with longevity risks, but superior rides with massive running cost cuts, proven range, reliability, and AQI-boosting quality of life via mass adoption.
Fixing the EV Awareness Gap
Ola Electric’s study urges EV manufacturers to amp up category building everywhere — ads, stores, ownership stories, service chats — to smash myths and speed India’s EV transition.
We feel that while the study true in most cases the stated numbers seem too optimistic than real world numbers. Realistically unless we are seeing faster charging times (sub 10 minute), better battery density (Solid State Batteries) and really high range (close to 500 km on a charge), there really is no real incentive to pay a reasonable amount and jump into the EV bandwagon. Hope the technology grows to our expectations quickly.
