If you’re riding the Royal Enfield Classic 350, Bullet 350, or Thunderbird from the BS3 or BS4 era, basically bought before April 2020, you’ve probably heard the chatter about E20 fuel. With India pushing for a 20% ethanol blend in petrol, older fuel systems are facing a bit of a mid-life crisis.

But don’t worry—Royal Enfield isn’t leaving its legacy riders behind. They’ve just launched official E20 retrofit kits designed specifically to help your older Unit Construction Engine (UCE) models handle modern fuel without breaking a sweat (or a seal).

Why Does Your Older RE Need an Upgrade?

The petrol you find at the pump today is different from what was available when your BS3 or BS4 bike rolled off the line. E20 fuel contains 20% ethanol, which is great for the environment but can be surprisingly “aggressive” on older rubber and metal parts.

Over time, this higher ethanol content can cause:

  • Rubber degradation: Fuel lines and O-rings can harden or crack.
  • Corrosion: Certain metal components might wear out faster.
  • Leaks & Blockages: Degraded parts can lead to messy leaks or gunk up your carburettor.

What’s Inside the E20 Retrofit Kit?

This isn’t just a fancy sticker, the package is a collection of ethanol-resistant components for your fuel system, including:

  • Upgraded, high-resistance fuel hoses.
  • New sealing elements and gaskets.
  • Specialized O-rings and rubber fittings.

For the 350cc UCE engines, these parts are specifically calibrated to keep your fuel flow smooth and your engine reliable for the long haul.

Pricing and Compatibility

The best part? This “future-proofing” is actually quite affordable. Here is the cost breakdown:

  • BS4 Models: The retrofit kit is priced at approximately ₹1,700.
  • BS3 Models: Depending on the extent of the carburettor update, prices can range between ₹3,000 and ₹4,000.
  • 500cc Models: While there isn’t a single “boxed” kit for the 500cc UCE, dealers can swap in individual upgraded parts to give you the same protection.

Note for BS6 Owners: If you bought your bike from April 2020 onwards, relax! All Royal Enfield BS6 models are already certified E20-compliant from the factory and don’t need these modifications.

Real-World Performance

Will your bike suddenly become a rocket ship? Not quite. The kit is designed for durability and reliability, not a performance boost. In fact, since ethanol has slightly less energy than pure petrol, you might notice a minor dip in fuel efficiency. However, the kit ensures your bike stays healthy and prevents expensive repairs down the line.

How to Get It

These kits are available exclusively through authorized Royal Enfield service centres.

Availability can vary by city, so give your local workshop a call to check stock before riding in. Installation is usually quick and can be done during a standard carburettor service.
