The future of the Indian “auto” just got a massive high-tech upgrade. Hyundai Motor Company and TVS Motor Company have officially put pen to paper on a Joint Development Agreement (JDA). Their mission? To design, build, and sell a game-changing electric three-wheeler (E3W) tailored specifically for the Indian market and beyond. This isn’t just a sudden whim; it follows the buzz created by their E3W concept back at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025. Now, they are moving from “cool idea” to actual mass production.

A Marriage of High-Tech Design and Local Expertise

This partnership is all about playing to each other’s strengths. Under the new agreement, here is how the workload is split:

  • Hyundai Motor: Taking the lead on design and R&D. They’re bringing their “human-centric” design philosophy and global mobility tech to the table to ensure the vehicle isn’t just functional, but comfortable and safe.
  • TVS Motor: Providing the muscle with their advanced electric three-wheeler platform. TVS will also handle the heavy lifting for local sales and manufacturing, using their deep-rooted legacy of trust in the Indian market to drive adoption.

Joongsun Ko, Senior VP at Hyundai, noted that India is a key market for the brand, while Sharad Mishra, President of Group Strategy at TVS, highlighted that this collab is all about delivering “purpose-built products” that set new benchmarks in quality.

Built for Indian Roads (and Indian Weather)

The companies aren’t just slapping a battery on a rickshaw. The upcoming electric three-wheeler is being engineered to handle the unique “charms” of Indian infrastructure. Retaining the features teased in the 2025 concept, the vehicle will include:

  • Adaptive Ground Clearance: A lifesaver for navigating monsoon-flooded streets.
  • Enhanced Thermal Management: Critical for keeping the battery cool in the blistering tropical heat.
  • Flexible Interiors: Making it a jack-of-all-trades, whether it’s used for passenger transport, delivery, or even emergency services.
  • Safety & Ergonomics: Designed for drivers who spend long hours behind the bars.

The “Make in India” Edge

A massive part of this JDA is a commitment to localised manufacturing. Major components are going to be sourced and built right here in India. This is a win-win: it helps build up the local supply chain, creates jobs, and—most importantly for the buyer—keeps the vehicle costs down and ensures spare parts are easy to find.

What’s Next?

With dedicated teams already working across both companies, the focus is now on rigorous testing and getting those all-important regulatory stamps of approval.

As India remains the world’s largest market for three-wheelers, the Hyundai-TVS partnership is perfectly positioned to lead the charge in sustainable last-mile mobility. By balancing Hyundai’s global engineering with TVS’s local electric mobility know-how, the India of tomorrow is looking at a much cleaner, quieter, and more efficient way to get around.
