The “range anxiety” struggle is officially getting a reality check. Ultraviolette and Bolt.Earth announced a massive strategic partnership to roll out a nationwide, interoperable Type-6 DC Fast Charging network.
This isn’t just about putting more plugs in the ground; it’s about adopting India’s recognized national standard (IS 17017) for light electric vehicles. Whether someone is riding the high-performance F77, the new X-47, or any other Type-6 compatible e-scooter or e-rickshaw, this move is designed to make charging as easy as refuelling with petrol.
What is Type-6 and Why Does it Matter?
Think of Type-6 as the “USB-C” for electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers. Instead of every company having its own proprietary plug, Type-6 is a standardized, purpose-built architecture for light EVs.
- National & Global: It’s published by the Bureau of Indian Standards and recognized internationally (IEC 62196-6).
- Versatile: It supports everything from e-bikes and scooters to e-rickshaws and electric ATVs.
- Ready to Go: Ultraviolette bikes are already built on this standard, so owners don’t need any annoying adapters or hardware tweaks.
The Rollout: Where Can You Charge?
The partnership is moving fast. Public Type-6 charging is already live in several key states:
- Kerala, Maharashtra, Telangana, Karnataka, Delhi, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu.
The Roadmap:
- Next 2 Months: Expansion to 50 upgraded stations.
- Next 24 Months: Bolt.Earth aims to deploy a staggering 2,000 chargers nationwide.
- More Power: While current 3kW DC chargers are standard, Bolt.Earth is launching 6kW and 12kW “Blaze DC” chargers soon to make pit stops even shorter.
Speed, Safety, and Smart Tech
Ultraviolette’s CTO, Niraj Rajmohan, emphasizes that interoperability is the key to rider confidence. Under this partnership, the tech is built to be both fast and incredibly safe.
Performance & Safety Stats:
- Charging Time: An X-47 or F77 can go from 0 to 80% in about 2.5 hours (and a full 100% in 3.5 hours).
- Industrial-Grade Protection: The chargers feature a multi-layer safety net, including Earth Detection, Reverse Polarity Protection, and Over/Under Voltage protection.
- The App Experience: Through the Ultraviolette and Bolt.Earth apps, riders get a “smart ecosystem” where they can find live chargers, monitor their session remotely, and use a simple scan-to-pay system.
A Unified Future for Indian EVs
S. Raghav Bharadwaj, CEO of Bolt.Earth, put it simply: charging needs to feel natural and always be within reach. By focusing on the Type-6 standard, they aren’t trying to reinvent the wheel—they’re just making sure the right wheel is adopted by everyone.
For the “Ultraviolette Army,” this means more freedom for long-distance touring, less waiting and searching for the plug, and the peace of mind that comes with a massive, reliable charging backbone.
