The SUV boom in India shows no signs of slowing down even while the sedan is trying to make a comeback. Buyers upgrading from hatchbacks and sedans are increasingly eyeing the pre-owned market for that coveted high driving position, extra ground clearance, and added cabin space.
Interestingly, while the overall market is flooded with choices, second-hand SUV sales are heavily concentrated around just a handful of proven favourites. According to sales data from top platforms, just five models account for roughly 39% of all used SUVs sold on their platform.
At a brand level, Mahindra leads the pre-owned SUV space with a 20% market share, followed by Hyundai at 15.5%, Tata at 12.7%, Maruti Suzuki at 10.7%, Ford at 9.2%, and Kia at 7.2%. Furthermore, manual gearboxes continue to dominate buyer preferences, with automatics claiming just 25.4% of total used SUV sales.
Here is a closer look at the top five best-selling used SUVs in India and why buyers keep choosing them.
1. Hyundai Creta (9.7% Market Share)
Taking the top spot as the single best-selling pre-owned SUV in India, the Hyundai Creta accounts for 9.7% of all used SUV sales. Known for its feature-packed cabin, comfortable ride, and solid resale value, it remains the default choice for families looking for an all-round mid-size SUV.
- Why it sells: Wide engine choice across petrol, diesel, and turbo-petrol powertrains.
- Gearbox split: Manual variants accounted for 75.1% (roughly three in four) of all used Cretas sold in 2026.
2. Ford EcoSport (8.7% Market Share)
Despite Ford ending local production in India back in 2021, the EcoSport remains a massive hit in the second-hand market, claiming 8.7% of overall sales. Its compact dimensions and generous ground clearance continue to make it an ideal choice for urban drivers looking for a solid build quality.
- Why it sells: Rugged urban styling and engaging handling that has outlasted the manufacturer’s local departure and now very reasonable prices.
- Gearbox split: Manual options represent 84.5% of all used EcoSport sales.
3. Tata Nexon (7.5% Market Share)
Holding 7.5% of the pre-owned SUV market, the Tata Nexon’s popularity is fueled by its stellar safety reputation and Tata’s rapidly growing service network.
- Why it sells: A impressive 209 mm ground clearance makes it uniquely capable of handling rough roads and oversized speed bumps.
- Gearbox split: Manual transmissions lead the way at 70.3% of used Nexon sales.
4. Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza (6.7% Market Share)
Representing 6.7% of used SUV transactions, the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza appeals to sensible buyers prioritising low running costs, easy maintenance, and effortless maneuverability in tight city traffic.
- Why it sells: True compact SUV footprint backed by Maruti’s unmatched nationwide service reach.
- Gearbox split: Heavy preference for three-pedal driving, with 89% of buyers choosing manual variants over automatics.
5. Mahindra XUV500 (6.4% Market Share)
Rounding out the top five with 6.4% of sales is the Mahindra XUV500. Though discontinued in 2021 to make way for the newer XUV700, it remains one of the most sought-after full-sized 7-seaters in the pre-owned space.
- Why it sells: Tough, spacious 7-seater layout that offers tremendous practical value for large families on a budget.
- Gearbox split: Manual variants dominate sales at 87.9%.
What Connects These Top 5 SUVs?
The underlying trend across all five models is practicality over flashiness. Four out of five are compact-to-midsize models built around affordable maintenance and everyday ease. Even the larger XUV500 earned its reputation on toughness rather than outright luxury.
Additionally, the heavy preference for manual transmissions across every single model underlines that price sensitivity and sensible long-term running costs remain the driving factors for used SUV buyers in India.
