It’s been a bit of a rough ride for Marc Marquez lately. The Ducati Lenovo Team rider is currently resting up at the Ruber Internacional Hospital in Madrid following a successful double surgery this morning.
A Tough Weekend at the French GP
The drama started yesterday during the final stages of the Sprint race at the French Grand Prix. A nasty high side crash left Márquez with a fractured fifth metatarsal in his right foot. To get him back on his feet, a top-tier medical team—led by Dr Samuel Antuna and including specialists like Dr Ignacio Roger de Ona and Dr Andres Maldonado—worked to stabilise the fracture.
Sorting Out a Lingering Shoulder Issue
While the surgeons were at it, they decided to tackle a second, pre-planned procedure on his right shoulder. This wasn’t a new injury, but rather a bit of unfinished business from a violent crash at last year’s Indonesian Grand Prix. That old trauma had started acting up again, causing him quite a bit of pain.
The doctors focused on a previous Latarjet surgery from December 2019. They discovered that some hardware had shifted and was actually compressing the radial nerve. To fix the issue, they removed two screws and a bone fragment that were causing the trouble.
What’s Next for the Ducati Rider?
So, what does this mean for the racing calendar? As the team had already flagged, Marquez won’t be lining up for the Catalan GP next week. He’s staying in hospital overnight for observation but should be heading home tomorrow to start his rehabilitation.
There’s no firm date for his return to the track just yet. The medical staff will be keeping a close eye on his progress over the next few weeks to decide when he’s fit enough to get back into competition. Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery for the Spaniard!
