KTM is back on track as production resumes at their Mattighofen base, marking the end of one of the toughest periods since the brand’s revival in the 1990s. The next big news for fans is the thorough overhaul of their core 790 lineup—the Adventure and Duke—as KTM gets ready to launch updated models, now expected to hit dealerships before 2027 due to previous delays.

Key Updates and Development

  • Production Moves and Market Strategy
The 790 range is set to continue as a vital part of KTM’s middleweight offerings alongside the LC4 690 Rally. With CFMoto in China still contracted for manufacturing, cost advantages will help keep these bikes competitive. However, U.S. availability is in limbo due to recent trade disputes, making KTM’s approach to global markets more complex. We in India will mostly not get these as well.
  • Reengineered Engines and Exhausts
Both the new Duke and Adventure bikes seems to have undergone major testing, even during KTM’s recent financial restructuring. Early prototypes reveal significant overhaul to the LC8c parallel twin engine: nearly every part, from oil pan to valve cover, is revised for improved reliability. The exhaust system, including a larger pre-muffler and redesigned end can, should resolve past quality issues and visually transform both models. The Duke drops its polarizing “banana” muffler, while the Adventure gets a fresh look with the new setup.
  • Chassis and Ergonomics
Expect some marginal changes in displacement and power to keep clear segmentation with the bigger 990 range and the upcoming 650s. Prototype sightings highlight more relaxed ergonomics for the Duke and traditional tank placement for the Adventure—gone are the in-front-of-the-foot tanks. Both models’ frame and swingarm geometry have also been tweaked for better packaging of the new exhausts and improved ride comfort.
  • Market Positioning and Styling
The updated 790 Adventure will stick to its travel enduro roots, offering something more road-focused than the Dakar-inspired 690 Rally, which remains the more hardcore off-road choice. Meanwhile, the 790 Duke will keep its sporty naked street bike identity, but now sits below the high-powered 990 Duke and above a new 650 sibling. With many design details still under wraps, don’t expect a final reveal until closer to 2027.

Other News: LC4 Models

In addition to the 790 refresh, KTM is also developing updates for its legendary LC4-powered machines. The 690 SMC R and Enduro R will start hitting dealers in September, and the light, Dakar-flavored 690 Rally prototype is already making waves in testing.
