It’s a massive day for Dominar fans in India. Bajaj Auto has just dropped a bombshell by reducing the price of its flagship tourer, the Dominar 400, by a whopping ₹37,000. The updated bike with the 350cc heart has already started arriving at select dealerships with this much friendlier price tag. The bike, which was previously retailing for around ₹2.40 lakh, is now priced at ₹2.03 lakh (ex-showroom). All this thanks to a very clever bit of tax planning by the folks at Bajaj.
The Secret: A Tax-Saving 350cc Heart
You might be wondering how Bajaj managed such a steep discount without stripping the bike of its parts. The answer lies under the tank. Bajaj has downsized the engine displacement from 373cc to 349.13cc.
By slipping under the 350cc threshold, the Dominar 400 now qualifies for a much lower GST rate of 18%, compared to the hefty 40% tax slapped on larger engines. Despite the smaller displacement, Bajaj is keeping the ‘Dominar 400’ nameplate to ensure it doesn’t lose its “big bike” street cred—a strategy they’ve also used for their recently launched Triumph 350cc models.
Does Less CC Mean Less Power?
Surprisingly, not really. While the displacement is down by about 24cc, the performance figures have stayed remarkably steady. This was achieved by keeping the 89mm bore but shortening the stroke from 60mm to 56.1mm.
The New Specs:
- Power: 40.6 PS @ 9000 rpm (almost identical but at higher RPM)
- Torque: 33.2 Nm @ 7500 rpm (down by about 2 Nm)
Basically, you’re getting a motor that feels a bit more “rev-happy” and lively at the top end, while only losing a negligible amount of low-end pull.
What Else Has Changed?
Aside from the engine internals and the massive price cut, the rest of the bike remains the same solid touring machine we know and love. You still get:
- 43mm USD front forks and a multi-step adjustable rear monoshock.
- Twin-channel ABS
- Full LED lighting and that signature beefy stance.
- Standard touring accessories like the tall windscreen and handguards.
Is It Now the Best Value Tourer?
At ₹2.03 lakh, the Dominar 400 has just become an absolute steal. It now undercuts several smaller 250cc bikes while offering nearly double the performance. It seems Bajaj has found the ultimate sweet spot: nearly identical performance, the same premium features, but a price tag that’s significantly easier to swallow.
