Honda is about to flip the switch on a whole new era. For over seventy years, the brand has been synonymous with the roar of internal combustion—from the track-ready CBR1000RR-R Fireblade to the globetrotting Gold Wing. But this spring, the very first electric motorcycle from the Japanese giant, the Honda WN7, is set to arrive in European dealerships, and it’s bringing a completely different vibe to the streets.

Project leader Masatsugu Tanaka has been opening up about the philosophy behind this landmark machine. While the pistons and exhaust notes might be gone, he insists the soul of a Honda remains perfectly intact.

The ‘Be the Wind’ Concept

When the team started work on the WN7, they weren’t interested in making a petrol bike clone. Tanaka San explains that the absence of engine noise isn’t a limitation—it’s a fresh start. By stripping away the vibration and mechanical “drama,” riders can finally focus on the sensory layers that usually get drowned out: wind pressure, tyre contact, and the sounds of the environment.

This led to the core concept: “Be the Wind.” Unlike the traditional “feel the wind” mantra, the WN7 is designed to feel fluid and continuous. Without the gears and revs, you get an unfiltered, linear throttle response that lets you flow through the landscape with total precision.

Award-Winning Design Meets Functional Beauty

You don’t just have to take Honda’s word for it—the design world is already obsessed. In early 2026, the WN7 picked up two massive accolades:

  • iF Design Awards: Claimed a Gold Award for masterfully blending classic bike DNA with a confident electric identity.
  • Red Dot Design Awards: Earned the prestigious “Best of the Best” title for its clean-energy aesthetics.

The bike features a slim, seamless body designed to catch ambient city lights at night. To keep things quiet and sleek, Honda has used a single-sided swingarm and, for the first time on one of their motorcycles, a belt drive to eliminate chain noise.

Fast Charging and Real-World Practicality

One of the biggest hurdles for electric bikes has always been the “where and how” of charging. Tanaka San and his team tackled this by adopting the same charging standards as electric cars.

  • Home & Public Charging: The WN7 comes with a 6.6kW OBD charger as standard.
  • AC Charging (Type 2): You can plug into a domestic socket or a wall box and get from 0-100% in 2.4 hours.
  • Rapid Charging (CCS2): If you’re on the move, you can hit a rapid charger and go from 20% to 80% in just 30 minutes.

Precision Performance: Four Riding Modes

Instead of just chasing top-end speed, Honda focused on how the bike feels. The WN7 uses regenerative braking and smart torque management across four distinct riding modes:

  1. STANDARD
  2. SPORT
  3. RAIN
  4. ECON

Because electric motors are so consistent, the bike does exactly what you ask of it every single time, allowing riders to focus entirely on their lines and braking points.

A Bridge to the Future

This project is a massive milestone for Tanaka San, who has spent his career trying to build “the world’s best motorcycle.” As Honda’s first electric model with a fixed battery, the WN7 had to pass the same rigorous quality tests as any petrol-powered Honda.

It’s all part of a bigger plan, too. Honda has committed to net-zero CO₂ emissions for all its motorcycle products by 2040. For those who are a bit sceptical about losing the petrol engine, Tanaka San has a simple message: don’t be “prejudiced without trying.” Once you experience the smooth torque and the silence of the WN7, you might just find a new kind of joy on two wheels.
