It looks like the days of paying a massive premium for imported superbike rubber are finally numbered. India’s biggest tyre manufacturer, MRF, has officially entered the high-performance big bike segment with the launch of its all-new Steel Brace SP-01 series. These locally-made, OEM-certified range is designed to offer world-class grip without the eye-watering price tag of its European and Japanese rivals.
Hayabusa Approved: The Suzuki Validation
The headline news here is that the Steel Brace SP-01 hasn’t just been “tested”—it’s been officially certified by Suzuki for use on its flagship machines. This includes the legendary Suzuki Hayabusa, the Katana, and the GSX-8R.
Being OEM-certified for a bike that pushes nearly 200 HP and 300 kmph is no small feat. It proves that MRF has moved well beyond making tyres for commuters and is now a serious player in the world of high-speed stability and performance.
Performance Specs: Zero-Degree Steel and Speed
So, what is actually under the rubber? MRF has used a zero-degree steel radial belt construction, which is the gold standard for high-performance tyres because it maintains its shape even under extreme centrifugal force.
Key Features of the SP-01:
- Speed Rating: These are Z-rated tyres, meaning they are safe for speeds up to 299 kmph (and W-rated for the smaller sizes up to 270 kmph).
- Single Compound Design: Unlike some dual-compound rivals, MRF opted for a high-performance single compound.
- Durability: Internal testing claims these offer 15% longer tyre life than the Bridgestone S23, which comes standard on the Hayabusa.
- Consistent Wear: MRF promises that the performance won’t suddenly drop off as the tyre gets thinner, ensuring a predictable feel throughout its life.

Pricing: A Massive “Made in India” Advantage
The most exciting part of this launch is the pricing. By manufacturing these in India, MRF has managed to undercut the imported competition significantly.
- The Hayabusa Set: A front and rear combo for the Hayabusa is priced at ₹34,000.
- Smaller Sizes: For sub-500cc bikes like the KTM 390 Duke, TVS Apache RR 310, and Triumph Speed 400, individual tyre prices range from roughly ₹6,680 to ₹7,985.
These tyres are also compatible with a wide range of popular performance bikes including the Aprilia RS 457, Kawasaki Ninja 400, and the Bajaj Dominar 400.
