OnePlus might be gearing up for an annual refresh of its flagship smartphone line-up, but there could be a major shake-up this time around. Reports suggest the tech giant may drop the regular OnePlus 16 and instead elevate the OnePlus 16R as its main flagship model for the year for India.
Historically, the main number series took the crown as the brand’s most advanced offering, with the ‘R’ variant following closely behind. However, due to the ongoing global chipset shortage, rumour has it that OnePlus will skip the global rollout of the standard OnePlus 16 altogether as the pricing might not work out for countries other than China.
While the manufacturer hasn’t officially confirmed details about the upcoming handset, leaks surrounding the OnePlus Ace 7 series have been making the rounds online. Since OnePlus typically rebrands its Ace line-up as the flagship ‘R’ series for global releases, insiders have pieced together what tech enthusiasts can expect from the upcoming OnePlus 16R.
OnePlus 16R Specs and Features (expected)
If the early leaks are anything to go by, the OnePlus 16R is shaping up to be an absolute powerhouse:
- Display & Visuals: The phone is expected to feature a 6.78-inch LTPO OLED screen boasting an ultra-smooth 185 Hz refresh rate and 1.5K resolution. For display enthusiasts, it’s tipped to include Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and HDR Vivid support, alongside an eye-watering peak brightness of 6,000 nits.
- Performance & Hardware: Under the hood, the device is rumoured to be powered by the flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, paired with up to 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of internal storage. It’s also tipped to pack an built-in cooling fan and water resistance for sustained heavy use.
- Battery & Fast Charging: Autonomy shouldn’t be an issue, as the leak points to a massive 9,000 mAh battery with support for 100 W wired fast charging.
- Camera Setup: On the photography front, the flagship is rumoured to sport a massive 200MP main camera sensor alongside a 50MP periscope telephoto camera featuring 3.5x optical zoom. Upfront, it houses a 16MP camera for selfies and video calls.
- Software: Straight out of the box, the handset is expected to run on ColourOS 17 with an Android 17-based skin.
Expected Launch Timeline in India
While OnePlus is keeping mum for now, leaks and industry speculation hint at the OnePlus 16R landing in the Indian market between November and December 2026.
Estimated Price in India
Early whispers suggest the upcoming OnePlus 16R could come in at a speculative price tag close to Rs 69,999. The expected price bump from previous generations is largely down to the ongoing memory chipset shortage affecting the global market.
Naturally, these numbers remain speculative until the official unveiling, and the final retail pricing will only be confirmed when the device officially launches.
