India’s private space industry is right on the edge of history. Skyroot Aerospace has officially announced the launch window for the maiden test flight of its Vikram-1 launch vehicle, which stands as India’s very first privately developed orbital-class rocket.

The highly anticipated Test Flight-1 is targeted for no earlier than July 12, running through to August 4. The actual liftoff is subject to finishing assembly and testing operations at the launch site in SDSC-SHAR, Sriharikota, alongside standard clearances for weather, safety, and range.

To mark the occasion, Skyroot has unveiled its Mission Aagaman patch. Named after the Sanskrit word for “Arrival”, the mission marks the arrival of India’s private orbital launch capability on the global stage.

Chasing Critical Flight Data

The main goal of Mission Aagaman is to capture real, in-flight performance data from every single system on Vikram-1. Pawan Kumar Chandana, Co-founder and CEO of Skyroot Aerospace, explained that they want to see exactly how the vehicle performs from the moment of liftoff through every phase of ascent. Because this data cannot be fully copied during ground testing, it will help validate their designs and shape future vehicle development. He noted that the second Vikram-1 lifts off, India’s private space industry will cross a brand-new threshold.

This marks Skyroot’s second big mission following the successful suborbital flight of Vikram-S back on November 18, 2022, which was the first private rocket to reach space from Indian soil. This upcoming launch will be a partially commercial flight, carrying a mix of domestic and international customers. The company plans to start full commercial operations after one or two successful orbital demonstrations.

Naga Bharath Daka, Co-founder and COO, mentioned that while Vikram-S validated their basic technology stack in 2022, Vikram-1 is their biggest step yet toward a high-cadence commercial launch programme built in India for the world. He credited the mission’s progress to the collective confidence of the Government of India, IN-SPACe, ISRO, investors, customers, and a dedicated team of over 1000 individuals.

Inside the Seven-Storey Rocket

All stages of the Vikram-1 have already been successfully integrated and stacked right at the launch pad. The flight will gather vital data across propulsion, stage separation, guidance, navigation, control, and overall vehicle performance.

Here is a quick look at the specs of this impressive machine:

  • The Build: Vikram-1 is a seven-storey-tall, multi-stage orbital launch vehicle built with an all-carbon composite structure.
  • The Power: It is driven by in-house developed propulsion systems, featuring 3D-printed engines and high-thrust solid-fuel rocket boosters.
  • The Payload: It is designed to carry small satellites weighing up to 350 kg to Low Earth Orbit (LEO).
  • The Target: This maiden mission is aiming for an orbit at an altitude of 450 km with a 60-degree orbital inclination.

The flight-ready rocket was previously unveiled by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi back in November 2025 during the inauguration of Skyroot’s Infinity campus.
