Apple Pay India Closer Than Ever as Apple Drops Major Clue

Rumours about Apple Pay coming to India have been doing the rounds for couple of years now, but a fresh update suggests an official rollout is closer than ever. Apple appears to be quietly assembling its Wallets and Payments team in India to lay down the necessary groundwork.

A newly spotted job posting reveals that the tech giant is recruiting a Business Development Manager – Wallet, Payments and Commerce to be based out of Bengaluru. Crucially, the listing explicitly names Apple Pay, giving observers plenty to talk about and all but confirming the launch. Samsung had an early start and are capitalizing by making things more secure and adding biometric support.

Laying the Financial Groundwork

The successful candidate won’t just be sitting around—they will be tasked with spearheading commercial negotiations and onboarding key players across India’s financial ecosystem. This includes linking up with acquiring banks, card issuers, and point-of-sale (POS) terminal vendors.

Interestingly, the job description also singles out major domestic transaction pillars, including UPI. That detail comes as a bit of a surprise, given that early industry whispers suggested Apple Pay might launch without Unified Payments Interface integration. The inclusion suggests Apple is setting up the core infrastructure now, potentially setting the stage for UPI support down the track.

Beyond network integrations, the role requires direct collaboration with domestic payment regulators, merchants, and Apple’s internal legal, privacy, and engineering teams to ensure local compliance remains airtight.

Bank Partnerships & Potential Launch Date

To ensure a smooth debut, Apple is expected to partner with major Indian banking institutions—including ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, and Axis Bank—to integrate Apple Pay into their existing platforms and offer wide coverage right out of the gate.

This latest recruitment drive lines up neatly with recent insider reports. Intelligence from industry analyst Mark Gurman, combined with an Apple Pay listing spotted on the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) website, points toward a potential launch date as early as 2 October 2026. If true, Indian iPhone users might not have much longer to wait.
