Manuel Gonzalez, the current leader of the Moto2 World Championship, stands at a major crossroads for his racing future as the 2026 season approaches. For weeks, Gonzalez made it clear he’d only move up if a factory MotoGP team showed genuine interest, otherwise he’d stay in Moto2. That moment might finally be here—but there’s a catch.

Sky Sports Italia recently revealed that Gonzalez is being eyed by Honda for a seat in the LCR Honda squad. However, his move is not entirely in his hands. The LCR seat is seemingly set to come available, with Honda’s Somkiat Chantra on the brink of departure. But Gonzalez will only get the slot if his Moto2 title rival, Diogo Moreira, decides to join Yamaha’s Prima Pramac Racing team rather than take the Honda opportunity himself.

Despite four Moto2 victories and the championship lead, Gonzalez hasn’t enjoyed overwhelming attention from MotoGP teams. He did, however, test a MotoGP bike with Trackhouse Racing at Aragon earlier in the year, showing there’s at least some interest and ability. World Superbike teams, including Yamaha and BMW, have courted him, but Gonzalez is firm—he’ll only accept an offer to race MotoGP, holding out for his top-tier chance.

So, for 2026, it all hinges on Moreira’s choice: should Moreira go to Yamaha, the LCR Honda seat may fall to Gonzalez. If not, Gonzalez seems poised to stay another year in Moto2, continuing his push for world championship glory. For now, the MotoGP paddock waits to see which domino falls first as two of Moto2’s biggest talents stake out their futures at the very top level.
