Francesco “Pecco” Bagnaia, the two-time MotoGP world champion with Ducati, finds himself in uncharted territory after a disappointing eighth-place finish at the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix. Despite starting third and maintaining a podium position in the race’s first half, Bagnaia rapidly faded, unable to defend his ground or match the pace of rivals like Marc Marquez and Marco Bezzecchi. The stark contrast is even more jarring given Bagnaia’s dominance at the Red Bull Ring in recent years—he’d won the previous three Grand Prix at the circuit.

After the race, Bagnaia didn’t hold back with Ducati, stating his patience was wearing thin. He stressed that he’d given his all but still finished 12 seconds behind the leader, unable to accelerate or hold position out of corners. Looking at his own race data made matters worse; he saw that he was actually 12 seconds slower than last year, despite being on the same bike his teammate used to win the race. Confusion and frustration were evident as Bagnaia pointed out the lack of consistency—strong pace in practice sessions would suddenly vanish when it mattered most in the race.

The situation prompted a public response from Ducati boss Gigi Dall’Igna, who labeled Bagnaia’s performance “underwhelming” and lamented the “wasted opportunity” at a track where Bagnaia was expected to shine. Dall’Igna emphasized that each race slipping by constituted a missed chance for improvement, particularly given Bagnaia’s previous strong results and good form in practice sessions leading up to the race.

Technical challenges, particularly with the Ducati GP25, seem to be central to Bagnaia’s struggles. The braking characteristics of the new machine have clashed with the double world champion’s usually strong braking style, forcing him to rewatch old race footage in an effort to rediscover his edge. Yet, as Bagnaia admitted, there’s “nothing comparable” between his riding now and his previously commanding performances. This mismatch between rider and machine, especially when juxtaposed with teammate Marquez’s dominance, has left Bagnaia searching for answers and Ducati under pressure to deliver them.

The recent run at the Red Bull Ring encapsulates a season of mounting frustration for Bagnaia—a talented rider facing a loss of confidence, dwindling patience, and an increasingly urgent demand for technical solutions. The coming rounds will be critical, both for his morale and Ducati’s championship ambitions, as Bagnaia and his team race against time to turn their fortunes around.
