According to the J.D. Power 2025 India Two-Wheeler Initial Quality StudySM (2WIQS), two-wheeler owners in India often report an increase in quality-related issues as their vehicles accumulate more kilometers. The study reveals that customers who have ridden their vehicles 2,500 kilometers or more experience an average increase of 9 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) compared to those who have ridden less during the first six months of ownership. A lower PP100 score indicates higher vehicle quality.

In the 2025 study, Royal Enfield ranked highest in overall two-wheeler initial quality with a score of 68 PP100.

The 2025 India Two-Wheeler Initial Quality Study (2WIQS), conducted in collaboration with Differential, Singapore, measured problems experienced in eight categories for internal combustion engine (ICE) models: brakes; connectivity, mobile app, and navigation; engine; fit and finish; gauges and controls; lights and electricals; ride and handling; and transmission. For electric two-wheelers, the categories of engine and transmission are replaced by battery and charging, and pick-up and performance.

Based on responses from 6,503 new two-wheeler owners across internal combustion and electric powertrains, the study covers vehicles purchased between May and December 2024. Fieldwork was conducted from October 2024 to January 2025 through face-to-face surveys across 42 major cities in India, encompassing 80 two-wheeler models from 12 manufacturers. Brands are ranked according to the aggregate number of problems per 100 vehicles, with a lower score reflecting better quality.

The overall industry initial quality in 2025 stands at 86 PP100, with engine-related issues being the most prevalent (18 PP100), followed by problems with lights and electricals (15 PP100) and brakes (15 PP100). Encouragingly, 58% of customers reported experiencing fewer problems than expected, a notable increase from 44% in 2024. Among all segments, electric scooter owners reported the highest proportion of fewer-than-expected issues (61%).

The study highlights that the electric scooter segment exhibits the most significant increase in problems with higher usage, recording 98 PP100—nearly double the combined average of other segments at 53 PP100. For electric scooters with higher mileage, the most frequently reported issues are related to brakes, lights and electricals, and fit and finish.
