After nearly ten years at the helm of Honda HRC’s factory MotoGP team, Alberto Puig is set to shift gears. From 2027, the 59-year-old Barcelona native will transition from his current position as Team Manager into a pivotal role as a Honda Racing Corporation Advisor.
Honda HRC isn’t letting his four decades of Grand Prix racing experience go to waste. Since being appointed Team Manager in 2018, Puig has been a massive asset to the squad, most notably guiding them to back-to-back Triple Crowns. In his new capacity as HRC Advisor, he’ll be sticking around to support Honda’s management and staff across the full spectrum of their two-wheeled racing activities.
So, what does this new gig actually involve? Puig will be keeping a close eye on the overall picture of Honda HRC’s motorcycle racing efforts. This includes shaping HRC’s youth development programmes and bolstering their presence in both the MotoGP and WorldSBK championships. He’ll be there to offer guidance to management and riders alike, ensuring the brand stays competitive at every level.
Reflecting on his journey, Alberto Puig noted that he first entered the World Championship paddock back in 1987. Since then, he’s done it all—racing, mentoring young talent, managing individual riders, and leading the factory team—all while remaining loyal to Honda.
Puig mentioned that his time in the paddock has been filled with both highs and lows, providing him with a wealth of knowledge on how to handle different people and high-pressure situations. After a lifetime of leading from the front, he feels his skills are now best utilised by looking at the bigger picture. He’s eager to use his massive bank of experience to help Honda HRC, its staff, and its riders grow as they tackle the future challenges and successes of the racing world.
