The all-new Norton Atlas and Norton Atlas GT mark the British manufacturer’s entry into the highly competitive middleweight adventure motorcycle and sport-touring motorcycle segments. As part of Norton’s ongoing resurgence, the Atlas range has been developed to expand the brand’s reach while staying true to the values that have defined Norton for more than a century: purposeful engineering, confident design and motorcycles that are built to be ridden.
According to Richard Arnold, CEO of Norton Motorcycles, the Atlas name represents an era when motorcycling was synonymous with adventure. With the new Norton Atlas and Atlas GT, the company aims to carry that legacy forward through a range of modern yet unmistakably British adventure motorcycles.
A New Take on the Middleweight Adventure Bike Segment
The Norton Atlas and Norton Atlas GT have been designed to redefine expectations in the middleweight adventure bike category. Both motorcycles combine a compact and characterful 585cc parallel twin engine, a lightweight steel trellis chassis and a comprehensive electronics package built around a Bosch six-axis IMU.
The goal behind the Atlas platform is simple: create a motorcycle that balances everyday usability with emotional appeal. Whether commuting through weekday traffic or covering long distances over a weekend tour, the Atlas range has been engineered to feel intuitive, capable and mechanically honest without overwhelming riders with unnecessary complexity.
Developed at Norton’s Solihull headquarters, the Atlas and Atlas GT form a key part of the company’s wider Resurgence strategy and further strengthen its position as a premium British motorcycle manufacturer.
Distinctly British Design
The Norton Atlas and Atlas GT are among the first models to fully showcase Norton’s latest design language. Rather than recreating historic Norton motorcycles, the design team focused on reinterpreting the brand’s visual identity through a contemporary lens that blends heritage with modern engineering.
Led by Head of Design Simon Skinner, the Atlas features a clean and reductive design with minimal visible fixings and very little visual clutter. The distinctive side panels create a sense of forward movement and drama that helps the bike stand apart from other adventure touring motorcycles.
The design programme also benefited from the advisory input of Professor Gerry McGovern OBE, Norton’s Chief Creative Advisor. His focus on integration, modernity and disciplined design helped shape a motorcycle that feels recognisably British without relying on nostalgia.
Importantly, every design decision serves a functional purpose. Rider ergonomics, airflow management and component packaging were all prioritised to ensure that styling never compromises mechanical integrity.
Two Different Personalities
While both motorcycles share the same core platform, they have been developed for slightly different purposes.
The Norton Atlas is the more adventure-focused model. It is designed to handle changing terrain and light off-road riding while maintaining strong road manners. Its suspension tuning, longer wheelbase and increased ground clearance place it closer to the traditional adventure bike category.
The Norton Atlas GT takes a more road-focused approach. Its geometry and suspension setup have been tuned to deliver improved road feedback, sharper handling and greater composure during fast touring and A-road riding without sacrificing long-distance comfort.
585cc Parallel Twin Engine
At the heart of both motorcycles is a liquid-cooled 585cc DOHC parallel twin engine featuring a 270-degree crankshaft configuration. The engine uses segment-best APS (Atmospheric Plasma Spray) coated cylinder surfaces and features a bore and stroke of 78mm x 61.2mm.
Power output stands at 69 bhp (70 PS / 51.5 kW) at 9,300 rpm, while peak torque is rated at 57.5 Nm (42 ft-lb) at 7,300-7,500 rpm.
The 270-degree crankshaft gives the engine a distinctive firing order and strong traction characteristics. Norton has focused on delivering broad, usable torque with smooth low-rpm response, strong mid-range acceleration and the ability to rev freely when required.
Performance and durability are supported by twin oil pumps that reduce internal friction and maintain lubrication stability under load. A high-flow cooling system manages heat efficiently, particularly in traffic and warmer climates.
Additional engineering solutions such as a knock sensor and protected air intake system improve reliability in demanding environments and varying fuel conditions.
A six-speed gearbox comes as standard, paired with a cable-operated assist and slipper clutch. Riders also benefit from a bi-directional quickshifter, allowing clutchless upshifts and downshifts.
Further refinement comes from a carefully tuned exhaust note, advanced gear refinement technologies, a curved radiator, single-sprocket DOHC layout and downdraft intake ports designed to improve cooling, airflow and packaging efficiency.
Lightweight Chassis and Balanced Dynamics
The Norton Atlas and Atlas GT use a high-strength steel trellis frame with the engine acting as a stressed member. The aim was to deliver precise handling, stability and rider confidence without adding unnecessary weight.
The Atlas has a wet weight of 188kg without fuel, while the Atlas Apex weighs 192kg. This places both motorcycles towards the lighter end of the middleweight adventure touring segment.
Mass centralisation has been a key focus throughout development. Careful positioning of the engine, fuel tank and ancillary components helps the motorcycle feel neutral at lower speeds while remaining stable on open roads.
The Atlas benefits from a longer wheelbase and increased ground clearance for improved capability on uneven terrain. The Atlas GT uses shorter-travel suspension and a road-oriented stance to improve cornering precision and road feedback.
Both motorcycles feature a cast aluminium swingarm, which helps reduce unsprung mass and improve rear-wheel control during acceleration and braking.
Fully Adjustable KYB Suspension and Braking Package
Suspension duties are handled by fully adjustable KYB components developed specifically for the Atlas range.
At the front, riders get fully adjustable 43mm USD forks offering 180mm of wheel travel on the Atlas and 140mm on the Atlas GT. The suspension system includes 20-step compression and rebound adjustment, allowing riders to tailor settings to different riding conditions.
At the rear, a fully adjustable KYB monoshock provides 180mm of travel on the Atlas and 140mm on the Atlas GT. The system also features stroke-dependent damping technology and a hydraulic preload adjuster for quick setup changes.
Braking performance comes from dual 310mm semi-floating front discs with radially mounted ByBre calipers and a 270mm rear disc with a ByBre caliper.
The Atlas and Atlas GT Apex variants also receive Electronic Combined Braking and Vehicle Hold Control functionality.
Wheel setups further differentiate the two motorcycles. The Atlas uses a 19-inch front wheel and 17-inch rear wheel to balance off-road ability with road performance. The Atlas GT adopts 17-inch wheels at both ends for quicker steering and a broader selection of road-focused tyres.
Tyres are Eurogrip Explo R Plus units, measuring 110/80 ZR19 front and 150/70 ZR17 rear on the Atlas.
Advanced Electronics Package
One of the standout features of the Norton Atlas and Norton Atlas GT is the comprehensive electronics suite.
